O cardeal Robert Prevost, de 69 anos, natural de Chicago, foi escolhido como novo Papa pelo conclave realizado no Vaticano. O anúncio ocorreu nesta quinta-feira (8), após a quarta votação desde o início do conclave, na quarta-feira (7). A eleição rápida é vista por especialistas como um sinal de unidade entre os cardeais da Igreja Católica.

Leão XIV sucede o Papa Francisco e traz consigo uma trajetória marcada pelo trabalho missionário e pastoral. Antes de sua eleição, atuava como cardeal no Peru e fazia parte da Ordem dos Agostinianos. Em seu primeiro discurso como pontífice, o novo Papa enfatizou a importância de “construir pontes”, reafirmando o compromisso com uma doutrina social e dando continuidade ao legado de Francisco.

A escolha de um cardeal norte-americano para o pontificado é considerada um marco, visto que Prevost é o primeiro Papa nascido nos Estados Unidos. Sua experiência missionária na América Latina e seu compromisso com o diálogo são características que devem marcar sua liderança à frente da Igreja Católica.
