TSE mantém condenação de ex governador do Rio por compra de votos

O Tribunal Superior Eleitoral (TSE) manteve, por unanimidade, a condenação do ex-governador do Rio de Janeiro Anthony Garotinho por compra de votos nas eleições municipais de 2016. A decisão, tomada nesta terça-feira, rejeitou o recurso apresentado pela defesa de Garotinho contra a sentença proferida pela Justiça Eleitoral do Rio de Janeiro.

A condenação decorre das investigações da Operação Chequinho, deflagrada em 2016 em Campos dos Goytacazes, que revelou o uso ilegal do programa social Cheque Cidadão para fins eleitorais. Garotinho foi acusado de corrupção eleitoral, associação criminosa, supressão de documento público e coação no curso do processo.

Inicialmente, o ex-governador foi condenado na primeira instância a 9 anos e 11 meses de prisão. Posteriormente, o Tribunal Regional Eleitoral do Rio de Janeiro (TRE-RJ) manteve a condenação e ampliou a pena para 13 anos e 9 meses.

A decisão do TSE confirma a gravidade das ações de Garotinho e reforça o compromisso da Justiça Eleitoral em combater práticas ilícitas no processo eleitoral.

No TSE, prevaleceu o voto do ministro André Ramos Tavares, relator do recurso. “É possível verificar elementos probatórios independentes que amparam a condenação”, pontuou.
