O ex-prefeito de São Gonçalo, Neilton Mulim, morreu nesta quinta-feira (23), aos 62 anos, em um hospital do Rio de Janeiro, onde estava internado lutando contra um câncer. A família confirmou a morte do político, que teve uma longa trajetória na vida pública e marcou sua atuação no município.

Neilton Mulim iniciou sua carreira política como deputado federal, cargo para o qual foi eleito em 2006, conquistando dois mandatos consecutivos. Em 2012, venceu uma acirrada disputa contra a deputada Graça Mattos e foi eleito prefeito de São Gonçalo, o segundo maior município do estado do Rio de Janeiro.

No entanto, em 2016, ao tentar a reeleição, Mulim não conseguiu votos suficientes para continuar no comando do Executivo gonçalense. Apesar disso, deixou um legado reconhecido por aliados e opositores.

Familiares e amigos lamentaram a perda e destacaram o compromisso de Neilton Mulim com a política e a população de São Gonçalo. O município está de luto pela morte de uma figura que fez parte de sua história recente.
